Call for applications to participate in the EDEM Training School on Ethics in Dementia

Lithuania 21th and 22th of September

The EC Cost action EDEM (CA21137) will host an Autumn Training School on the 21th and 22st of September 2023. The purpose of the school is to upskill mainly early-stage researchers in theoretical and applied aspects of ethical issues as they pertain to dementia care.

EDEM is a multi-disciplinary network of academics and practioners with a mission to promote the dignity, autonomy, and quality of life of people with dementia and their formal and informal caregivers while facing ethical challenges concerning dementia care. We aim to develop an ethical framework, recommendations and an educational toolkit available for use across Europe. The training school will entail a mixture of lectures and workshops which will be highly interactive with group discussions and debates on cases. As such it could appeal to either scholars or practioners interested in dementia and ethics or already working within the field.

Program

The training school covers two days:

• The first day we will focus on discussing how relevant theories and principles can be used to analyse ethical issues in dementia research, care and policy including theories of autonomy, dignity and personhood. We will focus on applying the relevant theories and principles to dementia care.

• The second day will focus on the theory of person-centred care providing participants with an understanding of the work of Tom Kitwood on personhood and dementia. We will then look at the core skills to achieve person centred care and the work of Steven Sabat and others on meaning making in communication with people with dementia. These are fundamental ideas for engaging with people with dementia in either research or clinical care.

Participants may be asked to present their own research and discuss it with fellow participants during the training school.

The detailed program will be published on the project’s website (link to be provided) in the beginning of May 2023.
