Call for applications to participate in the EDEM Training School on Ethics in Dementia.

Poland, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, 21-22 of May 2024

The deadline for the first call is March 15 2024.

The EC Cost action (CA21137) will host a Spring Training School on the 21th and 22th of May 2024. The Purpose of the School is to upskill predominantly early-stage researchers in theoretical and applied aspects of ethical issues as they pertain to dementia care.

EDEM is a muti-disciplinary network of academics and practitioners with a mission to promote the dignity, autonomy, and quality of life of people with dementia and their formal and informal caregivers who face ethical challenges concerning dementia care.  We aim to develop an ethical framework, recommendations and an educational toolkit available for use across Europe.  The training school will entail a mixture of lectures and workshops which will be highly interactive with group discussions and debates on cases.  As such it could appeal to either theoreticians or practitioners interested in dementia and ethics or already working within the field. The main theme of the school is decision making.

PROGRAM:

The training school covers two days:

  • The first day we will focus on ethical concepts in decision making and subsequently apply these to a clinical case study. We will focus on applying the relevant theories and principles to dementia care using available tools and frameworks.
  • The second day will focus on new developments in dementia and challenges for decision making with a workshop concerning decision making at the end of life and regarding technology and its use with people living with dementia.

Participants who are interested in presenting at the school are invited to send an abstract for consideration by a panel for a 15 minute presentation and 15 minute discussion.  This is not mandatory. Abstracts should be no more than 500 words and include either a research study in the area of dementia and ethics or a clinical case study concerning ethics and dementia that has been worked through.  Abstracts should be structured logically and state clearly if they are research or clinical case analysis.  In the latter case all attempts must be made to anonymize the case.  The Panel will chose the 10 best abstracts based on clarity of the abstract and fit with the programme and subsequently the following criteria:

  • Gender balance
  • Early stage career
  • Geographical spread
  • Professional spread

There will be an opportunity for anyone who submits an abstract but is not chosen to present to submit a short (10-15 minute) video presentation which we will post on the EDEM website.  The detailed program will be published on the project’s website along with the social activity program. (https://ethicsindementia.org/) by the middle of February 2024.

If you are interested in applying for participating in the training school please send a CV, including academic affiliation and research interests, and a short application where you state your research interests and how participation in the training school will further your work.
