The EDEM Cost action (CA21137) will host a Spring Training School on the 24th and 25th of April, 2025 in Barcelona, Spain.
The main theme of the school is The Ethics of the Future Dementia Care.

In the Training School, we will cover a variety of relevant subjects in context of the main theme. Among other subjects, we will discuss how to prioritize future dementia care, including how to prioritize between expensive new technology and non-pharmacological treatments like Cognitive Stimulation Therapy. Furthermore, the TS will possible discuss the potential future drain of dementia caregivers for the Global South as well as how to provide good care in societies with weak public healthcare systems. Additional information on the Training School will be shared by email and on the ethicsindementia.org website soon.

What is the EDEM COST Training School?
The Purpose of the Training School is to upskill predominantly early-stage researchers in theoretical and applied aspects of ethical issues as they pertain to dementia care.

EDEM is a muti-disciplinary network of academics and practitioners with a mission to promote the dignity, autonomy, and quality of life of people with dementia and their formal and informal caregivers who face ethical challenges concerning dementia care. We aim to develop an ethical framework, recommendations and an educational toolkit available for use across Europe. The training school will entail a mixture of lectures and workshops which will be highly interactive with group discussions and debates on cases. As such it could appeal to either theoreticians or practitioners interested in dementia and ethics or already working within the field.

There are 22 funded positions for participation in the Training School. When assessing the applications, priority will be given to early / mid-career researchers and also take into account diversity in gender, academic backgrounds and nationalities.

Do you wish to present as a participant at the Training School?Participants who are interested in presenting at the Training School are invited to send an abstract for consideration by a panel for a 15 minute presentation and 15 minute discussion. This is not mandatory.

  • Abstracts should be no more than 500 words and include either a research study in the area of dementia and ethics or a clinical case study concerning ethics and dementia that has been worked through.
  • Abstracts should be structured logically and state clearly if they are research or clinical case analysis. In the latter case all attempts must be made to anonymize the case.
  • The Panel will chose the 10 best abstracts based on clarity of the abstract and fit with the programme and subsequently the following criteria: Gender balance, Early stage career, Geographical spread and Professional spread.
